Uni fell 34-17 to a talented and highly regarded Capo Valley Christian Thursday night in our home opener. CVC won their opener last week and improved to 2-0. After Uni fell behind 20-0 with 7:30 to go in the first half, the young Trojans outscored the Eagles the rest of the way.

Junior Jake Rabold nailed a 26-yard field goal with seven seconds to go in the first half. This was a notable kick as Uni hadn’t converted a field goal for at least the past four seasons. Rabold also converted two extra points, kicked off twice averaging 58 yards, averaged 31 yards on five punts and caught a pass for 14 yards.

Senior starting QB Justin Tribble connected with Junior tight end Lucca Clouthier on a 22-yard scoring strike with just under five minutes to go in the third quarter. Tribble completed 10 of 22 passes for 137 yards while Clouthier caught two passes for 39 yards.

Sophomore pivot Dylan Elmer made some history with just under five minutes to go in the game. On his first snap at QB, he threw a bomb to Senior wide receiver Carl Oldham good for a 74-yard touchdown. Oldham was active all night catching seven passes for 143 yards, returning five kickoffs for 84 yards and making nine tackles at cornerback.

Senior running back Damari Carter led the ground attack with 16 carries for 62 yards. Junior RB Jacob Najar had four rushes for 18 yards.

Sophomore linebacker Marco Pablo Tirado and Junior defensive end Luke Emrich each had five tackles and a fumble recovery.

Senior cornerback Arvin Jahangiri, Junior defensive tackle Adham Osman and Junior defensive end Maxson Encheff each had three tackles.

Let’s not forget Cruz McMullens. The Junior cornerback / wide receiver had a beautiful pass break up in the end zone, one catch for 17 yards and he (or a family member) won the $1,000 halftime raffle drawing. Cruz did not learn of the drawing result until after the game.

CVC was led by Senior RB Joshua Monroe who ran the ball 23 times for 256 yards and four touchdowns, the proverbial one-man wrecking crew.

CVC had 409 yards on the night, 289 running and 120 passing. Uni had a competitive 290 yards (211 passing and 79 rushing).

CVC collected 22 first downs (14 run, 7 pass and 1 penalty) while Uni had 17 (6 run, 9 pass and 2 penalty). CVC was 3-7 on third downs, 0-1 on fourth down and 1-1 in the red zone. Uni was 2-9 on third down, 1-1 on fourth down and 1-1 in the red zone (field goal).

Uni goes on the road in one week with an away game vs Los Amigos at Garden Grove HS on Thursday, Sep 5 in a game originally scheduled for Friday, Sep 6.
